I am starting to see a trend of building toys that are incorporating magnets to make imaginative play more interactive and fun. The Build & Imagine: Malia’s House is a great set that allows the combination of doll play and building play.

Unboxing

The Malia’s House play set is packaged in a way that is easy to open and lets you get straight to play time. The package has an open flap that allows you to see the pieces before they are opened fully. Pull the cardboard box out of the sleeve and you can remove the plastic covering and pull out all the magnetic pieces. There are several wall pieces, triangles, two stand-alone friends, and many magnetic accessories like clothing and home items. Each of the wall pieces tell a story being part of either a home or yard scene, and the accessories are clothing and home items.

The Playtime Experience

The magnetic walls and triangle pieces on the Build & Imagine: Malia’s House are strong enough to stay together easily without repelling at the polar sides too strongly. I really enjoyed building because it was simple and there were multiple, almost endless combinations. The two standing friends are magnetic as well and the accessories include clothing pieces and outfits, which is great and adds to the diversity of the fun.

Things I Liked

I really like that the pieces aren’t too strong magnetically. It can be a problem to play with toys that are strong magnetically because the repelling power of the polar sides can be strong enough to destroy a structure.

Things I Didn't Like

At first I thought the box was going to be great for storing in between play times, but that only works if you put the box back in the original sleeve because it has an open face where everything dumps out.

Appropriate Ages

The magnetic accessory pieces are a choking hazard for very young children so make sure those don’t end up in anyone’s mouth. The manufacturer recommends this toy for children over 4 years of age.

Final Note

I really like the Build & Imagine: Malia’s House. This is a great gift idea and a great way for multiple children to play together without fighting over pieces. I think this is a great way to build and imagine in a fun and new way.
