Discovery Kids Dinosaur Excavation Kit (Dig Worthy?)

I love a good hands-on toy that involves mystery and science. The Discovery Kids Dinosaur Excavation Kit – Triceratops blends a science that is less often explored by little ones, Paleontology. This set is great because it teaches kids about the Triceratops and more about the science that is behind discovering dinosaurs and excavating fossils. The best part is once you’ve complete excavated your dinosaur you can follow the instructions to assembly your very own Triceratops model! I had a lot of fun with this set and didn’t have to spend a fortune to do it.

Unboxing

The play set is neatly packaged in a small cardboard box and plastic insert. When you open up the box there is a clay brick wrapped in shrink wrap, a brush and digging tool and a magnifying glass. There is also the inserts for instructions and the education pieces about the Triceratops and Paleontology.

The Playtime Experience

The play time with this set can get a little messy so I found that placing it on a baking sheet helped contain all mess in one place. The clay brick is easy to get into with the included tool and it wasn’t long before I had found my first bit of dinosaur bones. This isn’t a set that will be one play time or even one sitting. It takes more time and patience to delicately excavate the bones and then assemble the model.

Things I Liked

I really like that the play time doesn’t end with the excavation and includes building the Triceratops model. I love that for a relatively inexpensive investment this kit will include many hours of play and a whole lot of learning.

Appropriate Ages

Although I don’t think it has to be specific to an older age group, this Discovery Kids set is recommended for Paleontologists 8 and older. I think this age group will likely be the ones that get the most out of the education portions and have the patience to carefully excavate all the small bones. But it wouldn’t be too hard to include a slightly younger sibling on the fun.

Final Note

I had a lot of fun with the Discovery Kids Dinosaur Excavation Kit – Triceratops. This definitely gets two thumbs up from me for learning, fun and a unique play experience. As long as you have something to catch the mess this toy is definitely worth buying.
