S.T.E.A.M toys or Science, Techonology, Engineering, Art and Math themed toys are on the rise for popularity in the 2017 year. I thought the Green Science Water Filter Science Kit was a great example of learning and science based play. It was fun, easy to follow and taught the basic principles of water filtration and water cycle science. Plus there were additional experiments so you really get a lot for a minimal investment with this set.

Unboxing

This science set is very easy to get into and get started. Once you open up the box the instructions, building pieces and all the materials are packaged neatly and are well organized. The first experiment is the water filtration experiment and the instructions show you exactly how to build the filter system set by step.

The Playtime Experience

Building the water filtration tower was very simple. The instructions walk you through stacking the cubes in the correct order and which cubes should have restricted flow for proper filtration. There are individual packages of active carbon, gravel, sand and filter paper. The instructions tell you to rinse all the products before you put them in the filtration system and stack it. The order for stacking is gravel, sand, active carbon and then filter paper before it filters into a glass or bowl you place underneath. Then you get to really see the filter work by mixing water and potting soil with a little vegetable oil and pouring it in the top.

Things I Liked

I really like how easy it is to follow the instructions and how this science kit teaches about the water cycle in a fun and simple way.

Things I Didn't Like

The cube stacks don’t snap together or stay very secure. You have to be SUPER careful not to tip them over and send the contents crashing everywhere. I also wish there was an included dish or bowl instead of having to supply my own glass. It really doesn’t help the instability at all to be placed on a glass when it is already “tippy”.

Final Note

The Green Science Water Filter Science Kit is a very simple toy that teaches a very cool science. It is great for kids to see how water filtration works in the environment. I didn’t really like how unstable the stack was once all put together however. I would consider using some clear tape or something to hold the cubes together and try to add some stability to the unit.
