The new Osmo games are winning many awards and getting a lot of media attention right now. I had the chance to use the Osmo Coding Game on my iPad Air and here is my review.

Unboxing

The Osmo Coding Game is simply packaged in a paper sleeve and shrink-wrap. Once the shrink-wrap and the paper sleeve are removed you will find a small box labeled “Coding.” Inside the box are several pieces that clip together via magnets. The pieces include direction pieces and numbers that you will use to operate the Coding game with the character Awbie. You will need an Apple device in order to play with the Osmo games. The Osmo is compatible with iPad 2, 3, 4, Mini, Air, Air 2 and the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. You will also need the Osmo base in order to play Osmo games. This can be purchased with the Osmo Starter Kit.

The Playtime Experience

To play with the Osmo Coding Game you will need to visit the website at www.playosmo.com/start. This website does a great job of walking you through all the necessary set up steps. First, you will need to set up the base for the size tablet you are using and download the corresponding application for the Coding game.

The Osmo Coding Game uses the character Awbie to teach coding and commands. You use the series of pieces to guide Awbie on an adventure and keep him on the path of strawberries while he continues through each level.

Things I Liked

This is an extremely unique and innovative game I can see why everyone likes it so much. While it does involve screen time there is so much hands on activity and learning happening it’s easy to forget. I can see how beneficial these games can be for young minds learning to solve problems and build learning with hands on activities. The Osmo Coding game was a lot of fun to play and I really enjoyed it.

Things I Didn't Like

My only complaint with the Osmo set as a whole is that I wish it was able to be used with Android tablets as well. Being limited to Apple devices only really limits the play audience or causes what seems to be an unnecessary expense in order to play the game.

Appropriate Ages

The Osmo Coding Game is recommended for players ages 5-12, however I had a lot of fun with it myself. The Coding Game was a lot of fun but is great at teaching problem and puzzle solving skills as well as helping with cause and effect learning.

Final Note

I loved playing with the Osmo Coding Game. I am amazed at how cool toys are these days and the Osmo games are blowing away my expectations. They are a bit expensive, especially if you have to purchase an Apple device for your family’s use. However, I think that the games are a lot of fun and they are great at creating hands on play that kids actually enjoy.
