With virtual reality games becoming the next wave in gaming experiences, it is a whole new world to explore when looking to purchase your very own. I had the opportunity to play with the Samsung Gear VR which is made to work with Samsung smart phones.

Unboxing

The Samsung Gear VR comes packaged in a small box, which once opened, includes a small box of adapter accessories, head straps and the Gear VR goggles. The goggles are made to work with Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. As long as your phone is compatible with the system the only other thing you will need is the Oculus app downloaded to your phone.

The Playtime Experience

Playing with the Samsung Gear VR was a lot of fun. The oculus app only works once the phone is plugged in to the Gear VR device. Once on you are immersed in a 3D experience visually, there is sound but no included ear-buds. If you want a more immersive experience I recommend plugging in some ear-phones to your cell phones audio jack.

In the app you have several demo applications including a Discovery Zone and a roller coaster experience. There are other apps as well however many of these must be purchased to play.

Things I Liked

I like the comfort and the minimal wires/connections needed to play with the Samsung Gear VR. It really is just download the app and play, which makes it easy to get to the fun part.

Things I Didn't Like

The Samsung Gear VR is really hard on phone battery life. My phone battery was drained very quickly while playing with this in the oculus application. I also wish there were ear-phones or ear-buds included since the difference is night and day once you use them. I also don’t like how few phones are actually made to work with these goggles.

Appropriate Ages

Samsung recommends users be 13 or over when using the Gear VR goggles. The reasoning behind this is because young children are still developing their eye sight and long use with VR goggles can cause eye fatigue. I find that after about 20 minutes I need a break since my eyes feel tired and I do start to have some dizziness.

Final Note

The Samsung Gear VR was a pretty low level VR experience but it is on the cheaper side when you are looking to purchase. I think the value is still there and it is a great entry level point I just wish it wasn’t so hard on phone battery and wasn’t so specific to just a few models of phone. I think Samsung really limits their market by doing that. Since I have a compatible Samsung phone, I would purchase again for my own personal use but I can see why this may not make the top of most people’s list.
