Crayola Crayon Factory (Have Any Broken Crayons Laying Around?)

With all the hype surrounding the retiring of one color and introduction of another by the creators at Crayola. I thought it appropriate to create my own crayons with the Crayola Crayon Factory. This is simple toy but is packed with lots of play potential and creativity.

Unboxing

With a pair of scissors I had the Crayon Factory ready to play in just a few minutes. The instructions are inside the package and there is a warning on the actual “factory” device advising that you read all directions before operating to avoid breaking the machine. Included in the packaging are 8 crayons (without paper), 3 molds (a Heart, Puppy, and Car), a stripper for removing paper off any crayons you contribute to the process, and of course the wall adapter for powering the Crayon Factory machine.

The Playtime Experience

The instructions are very clear and there is minimal set up with the Crayola Crayon Factory. One of the most important parts of operating the system is removing all the paper from the crayons and not putting too much in. The instructions have a crayon “model” size and state clearly that any crayon or crayon pieces used in the machine should not exceed the size of the model. The molds are easy to use and two sided, they snap together and fit in the machine only one way which makes the process nearly fool proof. Creating a crayon creation will take several minutes, the factory is usually warm within a short amount of time but it takes 4-6 minutes for the crayon and the factory to cool down and allow you to open up the machine.

Things I Liked

I really liked that this is so easy to operate, doesn’t require batteries and has built in safety features to prevent burns.

Things I Didn't Like

I can’t say there is anything I dislike about the Crayon Factory itself. I actually wish the plug in was a little longer because I don’t feel like it reached very well if you weren’t very close to the wall.

Appropriate Ages

Crayola is recommending this play set for players 8 and up.

Final Note

I really liked the Crayola Crayon Factory, I think it is a neat way to use broken crayons to create a new color or a swirled design crayon. I also really like that you can continue to contribute to this play set to keep it relevant. It only comes with 8 crayons but with a rather inexpensive purchase you can continue to keep the fun going.
