The Scientific Explorer Disgusting Anatomy Brain offers plenty of disgusting fun. Although the process is multiple steps and children will need help using the stovetop. This is a great little science kit and I really enjoyed making my very own life-sized brain.
Unboxing this set was extremely easy. Once the box was opened I had two gelatin molds, gelatin powder, and a small bag with food coloring and paint brush. The brain mold is large and life size and as a bonus this kit contains an additional eyeball mold.
The Playtime Experience
The playtime with this toy is multiple steps. The instructions inside walk you through all the measurements needed to cook the gelatin mixture and cooling it in the gelatin mold. It took me a little over an hour to get everything cooked up, but that’s just because it needs 30 minutes or more of cooling time in between steps. The instructions recommend that you let the mixture sit in the mold for 24 hours before continuing your play experience to ensure that the gelatin completely solidifies. I found it to be solid after just 3-4 hours but gave it the 24 just to be safe. When it is finished cooling you rinse the mold with warm water to get it to easily release without tearing the gelatin.
After the mold is removed you can paint it however you like using the food coloring.
Things I Liked
I really appreciated that the instructions were so clear and made it so easy to follow along. All I had to supply was some water and flour.
Things I Didn't Like
Once I had the gelatin mold out of the plastic form I was pleased and disgusted by the feel of it in my hands. It definitely felt like what I would imagine a squishy brain would, but it did leave yucky reside of gelatin and water on my hands.
Appropriate Ages
This science kit is recommended for 9 years of age and up. However, adult supervision is recommended due to the hot elements of this kit.
Final Note
I really enjoyed the Scientific Explorer Disgusting Anatomy Brain. This kit is great and provides one disgusting, life-sized brain, made just the way you like. The mold does a great job of providing the realistic look and although it did take multiple steps I didn’t mind because the final outcome was so cool.
